27 Reasons Why You Should Homeschool Your Kids
Homeschool is on the rise BIG TIME. But why????
Why would people take it upon themselves to educate their own children when they don’t have to?
Well…the answer is…. there is no ONE answer or reason!
Some have religious reasons, some have unique lifestyles or parents jobs, some just simply WANT to take control of their children’s education.
Whatever the reason may be.. there is one thing for certain.. homeschooling is growing in popularity like CRAZY and unlike before it is your everyday, average, typical family choosing this path…. homeschooling is no longer for extremists.. it has made it’s way into every type of family you can imagine.. and for a good reason!
I split this list up into two different categories: academic reasons to homeschool & social/environmental/safety reasons to homeschool.. enjoy!
Academic reasons you should homeschool your kids:
- Teacher to student ratios are HORRIFIC in the public schools, even with an amazing teacher, there is no possible way they can give every student the personalized attention they need – if YOU are their teacher they can get one-on-one attention whenever needed
- No wasting time on random “busy” work that often fills MANY hours for children in the school system
- You don’t have to move on to the next topic if your child isn’t ready, you can take all the time you need!
- Likewise, if your child has mastered something, you can skip ahead!
- YOU know and love your child better than anyone, therefore you have the ability to teach them in a way that will speak to their hearts better than anyone!
- You can pick and choose any curriculum that you want to educate your child, you can even opt for no curriculum at all! (this is called “unschooling” and it’s a WHOLE topic for another time)
- You can educate your child by “interest lead learning” which has been shown to drastically increase student performance
- no tests!! (causes major anxiety in many children and is ineffective)
- no letter grades!! (can cause self esteem issues and are usually not a correct representation of knowledge)
- You can educate your child religiously… or not. (That’s the beauty of homeschool, you get to choose!)
Social/environmental/safety reasons you should homeschool your kids (basically everything else)! :
- You don’t have to worry about school shootings… so horribly sad but a reality.
- You don’t have to worry about adults mistreating your children in your absence.
- No school bullies!
- Your child can avoid the TOXIC SOCIALIZATION that goes on in schools, and instead focus on positive socialization in environments where you can help supervise and facilitate their relationships.
- YOU will remain the main influence in your child’s life… not another adult that you know nothing about.
- Prolonging your kid’s childhood is much easier done when you homeschool, you are able to control their exposure to internet, social media, music and other potentially harmful content. When they are in public school you have limited to no control over this.
- More time for family! You can work around your own family’s schedule instead of going by the public school’s calendar. I know for my family, my husband works irregular hours, if my kids were in public school they would only EVER see him on Sundays.
- No weird new age ideologies or anti-Christian teachings.
- More time for your children to fully dive into their passions and interests instead of them just being “extracurriculars”.
- Waaaay less stress on the child.
- No early chaotic mornings rushing around.
- No waiting in long drop off and pick up lines.
- Your kids can have a PLAY CENTERED CHILDHOOD.
- Homeschooling allows you to CREATE A STRONG FAMILY CULTURE <—Click here to read this post on “How to Create a Strong Family Culture”
- They will remain FAMILY oriented for much longer and avoid peer orientation at too early of an age.
- They will learn to think for themselves and be an individual rather than being put in a box.
- They will not be dumbed down by state mandated curriculum, the sky is the limit when it comes to homeschooling opportunities/options.
Ultimately the way you choose to educate your children is a very personal decision that can be affected by many different factors and circumstances. Which ever way you decide to go, the most important thing is that you are an INTENTIONAL PARENT who cares very much and puts much thought into your parenting decisions.
I hope this list gave you some thinking points and maybe a couple things that you’ve never before considered. The more perspectives you have, the better.
